ANBB Ret Marut Handshake RASTER-NOTON (R-N 120, 12” + digital) We were looking forward to hearing the first release by ANBB, the new project of Carsten Nicolai ( Alva Noto) and Blixa Bargeld ( Einstürzende Neubauten), even more so after reading the rave reviews of their recent live performances. But the result on record doesn’t really live up to the expectations set by their live show. Of the five tracks included on “Ret Marut Handshake”, those that stand out the most are the ones in which the common initiative is least noticeable, i.e. those on which Alva Noto sounds like Alva Noto and Blixa Bargeld sounds like Blixa Bargeld: “Elecricity Is Fiction”, “I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground” –their version of an American traditional– and, above all, the title track, which is without a doubt the best find here. In turn, Nicolai’s attempts to implement his sonic palette in the format of a song -pedantic on “Bernsteinzimmer”, though he comes up with a decent result on “One”, a revision of Harry Nilsson- reduce the force of the final result. Let’s wait and see what the album brings. Oriol Rosell
