Kebacid Party Hat Ep TURBO (TURBO 081, 12” + digital)

Aside from a couple of remixes, Jesper Dahlbäck and Jori Hulkkonen have only collaborated three times during six years on the Kebacid project: a brief release every couple of seasons, give or take a month. However, listening to the material you can perceive a genuine enjoyment from the Finnish-Swedish pair. The effort invested is apparent, and we think if they could, they would spend the whole day twisting 303s buttons and sprouting basslines of a sky high corrosive level. Kebacid, as it says on the tin, is uncontrollable acid-house by the gallon, a gift to those acid heads that still spend some money on crackling vinyl. Why there aren’t there more releases by Kebacid doing the rounds in the record shops? Why they don’t get together more often to make this music? There could only be two reasons: It’s quite difficult for labels to embrace this type of music because there’s only a small group of DJs who play this vintage sounding house, believe it or not. Either that, or it’s due to a serious scheduling conflict of both artists who DJ, produce and collaborate relentlessly. Whichever one it is, it doesn't make it any easier for us: The three tracks of “ Party Hat” stand out on a line of raw, rugged and galloping acid revitalised in Europe by Hardfloor -“ Jack the Potato”, ironically, is an involuntary tribute to the German veterans’ “ Acperience”- while “ Bandy Party” adds an excessive and aggressive tone, something that demonstrates the relevance of acid as a dancefloor weapon. If I had to put my money on a particular track, though, it would be “ Journey of Life.” A ten minute journey which starts with an Afro groove, progresses by stumbling and slows down the bassline at the end. It shrinks to just an attack and decay that resonates in the eardrum while the percussion loses the plot. Will we have to wait until 2012 for the next one? I don’t think I could stand that.
