Willis Earl Beal is the stellar signing of Hot Charity, the new Bronx-based subsidiary platform of XL Recordings. The label will release his debut album, “ Acousmatic Sorcery”, next Monday, though it has been released before, albeit with a different track order. The eleven songs move between lo-fi anti-folk ( “ Sambo Joe From The Rainbow”) and elliptical blues, minimal and almost aggressive ( “ Take Me Away”). “The desolate atmosphere was always in my head”, says the musician.
The Chicago musician recorded the LP when he spent some time in Albuquerque, as he wanted to be close to the desert, something he'd been thinking about for years. His beginnings in New Mexico weren't exactly easy, sleeping rough for quite some time, until he found a job. His luck changed, and with the support of XL, much better times will come.
