Mala's Cuban Experience

The Londoner will release “Mala In Cuba” in September

In September, Brownswood will release Mala In Cuba”, Mala's solo debut full-length. The dubstep pioneer, half of Digital Mystikz, travelled to Havana in the company of Gilles Peterson, in order to collaborate with local musicians. In declarations to FACT magazine, the British producer explained that, though at first he didn't really know what direction the project was going to take, the click with the Cuban musicians was immediate. “We ended up working with a guy called Roberto Fonseca and his band. It wasn’t until the very morning that we went into the studio in Havana that the concept came about – which is that they were going to record traditional Cuban rhythms for me, but at the tempo I enjoy writing music at… around 140.”

Mala returned to London with over 60 GB worth of music, from which he then built his album. “I wanted [the album] to feel Cuban in a way, to respect the musicians and the culture, but at the same time I still wanted to make music that I could play to my audience, and in my environment – on a sound system. It’s Havana meets South London, you know?”

The LP will be out on 10th September, preceded by a 12” featuring Cuba Electronic” and Calle F”. Listen to them after the jump.
