In a recent interview given to The Stool Pigeon, Cat Power gave two basic clues about her new album, the first with her own stuff since “The Greatest” (Matador, 2006). According to Chan Marshall, the album came out of working alone; this time, she played all of the instruments that are heard on it. Furthermore, the final stages of the album’s gestation ran parallel to the end of her relationship with her partner of the last three years, actor Giovanni Ribisi: “I cut my hair three days after [the break-up], I took a plane to France, and I finished the album” . The result, "Sun", will come out on 4th September via Matador.
The return to instrumental self-sufficiency doesn’t imply a return to the postulates of singer-songwriter folk-pop. At least not in “Ruin”, the first single off of the album, dominated by repetitive pianos, spirited bass with an almost disco soul, and muffled percussion.
