Being the friends and admirers of each others work that they are, it was just a matter of time before Alva Noto and Blixa Bargeld found the right context to collaborate. The platforms Asphodel, 23five Incorporated and RE/Search Publications provided that context when, in 2007, they were invited to an artists residency that led them to work on their first joint performance, which was presented in September of that year at the Recombinant Media Labs gallery in San Francisco. There lies the seeds of anbb, a collaborative project based in abstraction and improvisation which looks to generate synergies between the multiple levels of audio-visual-verbal while confronting (or integrating) the personal background of each collaborator: pop, risky rock, and spoken word with phonetic undertones, in the case of Bargeld; and electronica experimentation for Noto.
The duo released their disc in June, coinciding with their Sonar appearance. Now we hear that the “Ret Marut Handshake EP” will be continued on 4th October when they release the album “Mimikry” via Raster-Noton, which adds eight new tracks to the two of the already existing ones from their EP. Two of these new ones are actually covers of already known tracks. An interesting fact: on two of the tracks of the album, you can hear the vocals of Veruschka von Lehndorff, the model/actress from the 1960’s who is remembered for her part in cult films like “Blow Up” by Michelangelo Antonioni. The album, which will be released as a CD and double vinyl, will come with a poster and a 16-page booklet with texts and drawings by Bargeld.
