After their last artistic digressions, leaning more and more towards non-musical territories bordering on the nonsensical, it’s good to know that Jamie Stewart, the soul of expressionist explorers Xiu Xiu, has a fistful of new songs ready. Xiu Xiu is no longer an exclusively Jamie affair. He is now accompanied by Zac Pennington (the head of Parenthetical Girls, a band that owes a lot to early Xiu Xiu) and Sam Mickens (The Dead Science). Together they will be working on the music and lyrics of a new collection of songs that will be released early next year on Bella Union (in the UK) and Polyvinyl (US). As a first sample of the group effort, there will be a 7” out in September featuring the original “Daphney” and a cover version of Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World”, which promises not to leave anyone feeling indifferent.
