Angry, cryptic and enigmatic experts in the use of the resources at their disposal –with special attention paid to the decontextualisation of images, the semantic mechanisms and the production of sentences with elements of slogans or manifestos– to create a halo of confusion and mystery around them, embraced by some with almost religious fervour. That’s Jeau, Lung, Elle Jaie and Evanse for you, the soul of the revolutionary pop collective called Wu Lyf (World Unite – Lucifer Youth Foundation). In the wake of their first singles that have both been acclaimed and derided (check the video of “Spitting It Concrete Like The Golden Sun God” and you’ll understand that Wu Lyf look for controversy, even through paying tribute to Ruggero Deodato), PIAS have just announced the Mancunians’ debut album will be released on 23rd May. We don’t know what we’re going to get, but bearing in mind that they’re the first to confirm that Wu Lyf don’t represent anything and that they’re as interested in music as they are in exploiting other means like video, we can be sure that we will be hit with something that escapes the politically correct.
