A record company CEO hardened by countless battles, Jay-Z’s decision of betting for a new artist doesn’t come as surprise. What’s unusual is that this new artist is a nine-year-old girl that has barely started school, let alone her musical career. The name of the new Jigga’s protégé is Willow Smith, the spirited daughter of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will “Prince of Bel-Air” Smith.Last Tuesday, the first song by little Willow got leaked online. As soon as Jay-Z listened to “Whip My Hair”, the song’s title, he decided to sign her to his label Roc Nation. “I was like, man, that record’s a smash. And then [Roc Nation partner] Jay Brown said, ‘She’s 9,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ And [then] he was like, ‘She’s Will and Jada’s daughter,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa!’ and it just went from there.” Jay-Z also said it’s very rare to find young, talented and creative artists like Willow. But that’s not all: in the past couple of days, Jay has expressed words of admiration for Willow’s “professionalism” and “maturity”. About their first meeting, Jay said: “She walked in and the first thing she said was, ‘I’m really nervous,’ and I thought, ‘That’s maturity to explain exactly how she was feeling when she walked right into the room. I knew right then she was a star. I believe in superstars. I believe in big records and superstars, and I think she has both.” Listen to the song and judge for yourself. A new Rihanna in the making?
