Once again, the Unsound crew are preparing to make Krakow the epicentre of risky music for a week. The upcoming edition will take place from 9th to 16th October, at several locations in the former Polish capital, with this year’s theme being Future Shock!. The event takes one of Alvin Toffler’s most famous books as its starting point - creating a program of events which include performances, projections, installations and debates - dedicated to the exploration of concepts popularised by Toffler, like the ideas of the future seen from the past and “information overload”. In regards to the music, the festival has revealed some names that raise the bar further. Unsound 2011 will have electronic pioneers like Morton Subotnick (revisiting his classic “Silver Apples of The Moon” accompanied by the visuals of Lillevan) and John Foxx on the bill, industrial classics like Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti (playing songs by Chris & Cosey), champions of the new cosmic scene like Dylan Ettinger, iconoclasts like Hype Williams and Laurel Halo, dub and psychedelica lovers like Sun Araw, bass agents like Dreadnought (the project by Untold and Samuel Chase), Addison Groove, Objekt, 2562 and Joy Orbison, heroes of neo-classical ambients such as Deaf Center, hypnagogic masters like The Caretaker, and snipers from the non-formulaic club music scene like Andy Stott, Ital, MMM and Kassem Mosse.
In the specials section, Kode9 will present a unique set with German video artist MFO - in which they will pay tribute to the Chris Marker classic, “La Jetée”. The Ricardo Villalobos / Max Loderbauer tandem will do their second public performance of “RE:ECM”, this time in the wonderful 15th century gothic church of St Katherine.
Many names are still to come, but the aforementioned are reason enough to consider a trip to Krakow in October. We certainly don’t want to miss it.
