Now we know the title “Tapes”, chosen by The Rapture for their release on !K7, had a definite reason to be so. That album wasn’t a new “DJ-Kicks” with a different title, but the first volume of a different compilation series that will see another instalment soon. The Big Pink (i.e., Milo Cordell, one half of The Big Pink and owner of Merok Records) is responsible for the second !K7 “Tapes” release. The title seems to be alluding to the culture of old mixtapes and the nostalgia for homemade tape compilations. Unlike The Rapture—theirs was a more panoramic vision spanning three decades—The Big Pink have chosen some of their contemporary favourites, mainly “room” projects, among which are oOoOO’s and Balam Acab’s witch-house, The xx’s minimal pop, Joker’s grimey dubstep and Actrees’ bewitched, de-constructed bassy techo. The album will be in stores as of 18th October via !K7.
