Sufjan Stevens has provided new music for “MAKE”, a documentary directed by Scout Orden and Malcolm Hearn about self-taught artists and outsiders that was the inspiration for the Michigan troubadour’s “The Age Of Adz” (Asthmatic Kitty, 2010). The sleeve of that album is the work of Prophet Royal Robertson, one of the stars of the film, whose life inspired Stevens. Asthmatic Kitty, Stevens’ own label, will release the film on 21st June. The musician describes this work as “ a beautiful and insightful look at the sublime task of making art when nothing else will do.” The other three artists profiled in the piece are Hawkins Bolden, Judith Scott and Ike Morgan. Apart from material written especially for the documentary (by Sufjan, Marc Bianchi from Her Space Holiday and Craig Montoro from Takka Takka), the soundtrack features previously released material by Oneida, Au Revoir Simone and Jim Guthrie.
