The respect of the international electronic music scene for Steve Reich, a pillar of the American repetitive school, was well documented on “Reich Remixed” (Nonesuch, 1999), an album featuring remakes by Coldcut, Howie B, DJ Spooky and Nobukazu Takemura of some of the most famous works by the minimalist composer. Although back then Reich declared he was closer in spirit to some of those electronic producers, the Indava label has come up with a surprise: an official “remix contest” aimed at reinventing one of Reich’s most recent pieces, the 3rd movement of his “2x5”, a composition with some rock influences (he uses two electric guitars on it), recently released via Nonesuch Records and accompanied by “Double Sextet”, a piece that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize last year. Listen to the 3rd movement of “2x5” at the end of this thread. Now, it’s your time to put your imagination to work. More details here.
