Last summer, Sub Pop threw a curve ball at the stomach of their oldest fans when announcing the signing of Shabazz Palaces, the combo of avant-rappers with abstract tendencies and pan-African ideology. Five months on, and the contract between the veteran Seattle imprint and the rhyming collective is starting to bare fruit. Yesterday, the label let us know about “Bekah”, a new track by the crew led by Ishmael Butler (formerly of Digable Planets) that you can now add to your hard disk (download it through the widget below). Apart from giving us this slow-mo and psychophonic sample-ridden tune, they also provided some details on “Black Up”. There will be ten tracks on the album, many with cryptic titles, produced by Knife Knights, and it will be released on 31st May on CD and vinyl. While the countdown is starting, Shabazz Palaces will be testing the new material with various gigs in the USA, one of them at the mythical SXSW in Austin, Texas. But for now, listen to this.
