La Roux

Bored with herself

La RouxTwo weeks ago, La Roux launched a new video and a new vedit—featuring Kanye West—of “In For The Kill”, a track chosen to promote the recent release of their album in the U.S. Twenty months after putting out their first reference, Eleanor Kate Jackson and Ben Langmaid are still tied to their first collection of tracks. Imagine spending 18 months recording, playing and going over and over again the same ten songs. Tiring, right? This must be the reason why Elly Jackson is no longer interested in taking her own medicine.

In a statement to Spinner, the redhead admitted that 80’s-style synth pop bores her to death. "I don't want to make synth music for the rest of my fucking life," she said. "It was a time when I was into that, but whatever, it's done with; it's gone. The whole genre is so over. It was my thing and I'm bored with it. If I see anything more '80s-themed, I'm going to bust." So, Elly is already fed up with what even today, in the absence of new songs, defines the style of La Roux. And moreover, she seems to be aware of the fact that the success of her first album was mainly a question of being in the right place at the right moment. In June, Elly said to A.V. Club: "As far as I'm concerned, the '80s resurgence is over. If I released this record in a year or a year and a half, it wouldn't be received in the same way at all. It happened to catch the industry at a good time."

And so we suspect their new album, whenever it comes, will point to new directions that, apparently, are yet to be defined. “I want [the next album] to be more human, more open, warmer […] I'm as impatient for a new direction as anybody else, but I think it's going to be a bit of a new discovery […] No more than six months from now, we'll be really pushing it. But at the same time, we have some experimenting to be done. I know what my influences are, so there's no problem there."Elly Jackson, relinquishing her 80’s inheritance…
