Although many of us got to know him thanks to his participation in Savath and Savalas (the folk-inclined project by Guillermo Scott Herren, alias Prefuse 73, and Eva Puyuelo Muns) and his more recent efforts as Helado Negro (on the Asthmatic Kitty label), Roberto Carlos Lange has been making atypical and colourful hip-hop for over five years, under the moniker Epstein. In recent times, Asthmatic Kitty has been digitally reissuing Epstein’s older works for labels such as Botánica del Jíbaro and Arepaz. Taking advantage of the occasion, the label handed over Epstein’s entire archive to two of their favourite beat-makers, Jaytram (the project focussed on electronica and abstract beats of Jason Trammell, the drummer of Yeasayer) and Prefuse 73, with one goal: to re-imagine a sufficient amount of material to make a whole album. The result, titled “Prefuse 73/Jaytram/Epstein”, was released earlier this very week. You can get your download here for the price you see fit.
