About ten months ago, a charming Peter Broderick told us in an interview: “Right now I’m in the last stage of recording my new album, on which I have been working without stopping since January, and to me this record feels very different from the previous ones. The album I’m working on now sounds more like a combination of everything. At times it’s pretty dense, with all kinds of different instruments playing at the same time. It’s been growing until it became a really big project, although right now I can’t tell you why. I trust the record will be finished and ready for release next year. There’s still a lot of work to be done.”.
It seems that an unwelcome knee operation interfered with his plans and the album, still waiting to be mixed, has been post-poned to 2011. Before that another effort, quite different, will be released, recorded during the months of convalescence that followed the operation. Broderick says that in April he went into the Type Foundry studio in Portland, the same where he recorded “Docile”, with the idea to record and mix a whole album in one day, without overdubs and with one guitar, a piano and his voice. And that’s what he did. The mini-LP that has come of it contains seven songs and is titled “How They Are”. It will be released on 6th September via Hush in the US and Bella Union in Europe.
