Word has it Jay-Z, Interscope, Roc Nation and Bad Boy were all flirting with them. In the end, as was to be expected, Odd Future have decided to follow their instincts. The effervescent LA crew announced yesterday that they’re hooking up with RED, a division of Sony Music dedicated to the development of new artists and the distribution of music from small independent labels, to create their own platform: Odd Future Records. The contract includes all artists associated with the OFWGKTA posse, giving them total creative freedom and the ownership rights to all their work. As their manager Chris Clancy puts it: "It's based on getting the distribution deal we've always envisioned that allows the group to 'sign themselves' to their own company and keep their masters. They will have 100% creative control of all aspects of their music, art, and release schedule with no 3rd party participation in outside business. Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that its in everyone's best interest to maintain the group's authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There's no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works... It's about to be fun... and different...."
It will be interesting to see how OF’s career develops from now on and how this decision will affect it. Maybe now it doesn’t look like the big revolution many people seemed to expect, but it’s obvious that, if the wolves end up gobbling up the hip-hop galaxy, the majors will be in a very tight spot. Will they change the rules of the game?
