As we were expecting, the controversy aroused by statements pointing to the alleged “impersonation” of Michael Jackson’s voice on several of the songs featured on “Michael” has gained a new chapter. The accusations, made by several people related to the artist (even his mother, son and daughter openly expressed their doubts about the authenticity of the voice on songs like “Breaking News”), are not that far-fetched because even the Sony Music managers in charge of the album’s production admit to having had his doubts regarding the genuineness of the vocals.
The persons responsible for managing Michael Jackson’s legacy, led by lawyer Howard Weitzman, have issued a long press release saying both them and Sony have taken all the necessary steps to guarantee the legitimacy of those dubious recordings. According to them, “forensic musicologists” have helped determine that the songs—which in some cases have been composed using samples and fragments from different demos—feature Michael Jackson’s real voice. During the investigation, former Jackson’s producers including Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger, Stewart Brawley, Michael Prince, Dr. Freeze and Teddy Riley, as well as veteran collaborators like Greg Phillinganes (Michael’s musical director for over two decades) were consulted, and all of them agreed on the fact that the voice on the controversial songs is indeed Michael’s voice. Even if this controversy finds no prompt solution, “Michael” will be released according to plan—it already has a definite tracklist—a month from now. Epic has also announced on Monday 15th November a second song from the album will be available for listening on michaeljackson.com. The song is called “Hold My Hand” and features Akon. An unfinished version of the song was leaked a couple of years ago.
