Martina Topley-Bird

In praise of simple eyes

Martina Topley-BirdFor better or for worse, the voice of Martina Topley-Bird will always be associated with the shadows of Maxinquaye (Island, 1995), that immortal first album by Tricky. And this is despite having released two suggestive solo albums - “Quixotic” (Independent, 2003) and “The Blue God” (Independent, 2008)- and collaborated with such illustrious and diverse artists as Danger Mouse,, David Holmes, Diplo, Gorillaz, Leila, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Common and Massive Attack. Encouraged in first instance by Damon Albarn, Martina has revisited and re-arranged part of her previous songbook in a more stripped and acoustic format that now gives her voice priority over the instrumental methods that always mark minimalist terrain. Eleven of these new interpretations of her back catalogue (all recorded live with the help of Fergus Gerrand) plus four brand new tracks, come to light today on Honest Jon's. You can listen here to samples of all of the songs of the album, entitled “Some Place Simple”, whose calling card is " Phoenix". Martina Topley-Bird- “Some Place Simple”01. Baby Blue 02. Phoenix 03.
