We heard from Juv in August, thanks to an eclectic mix by Erik Skodvin (alias Svarte Greiner) for Type Recordings’ podcast series. There, in the dying seconds of a mixtape that gathered tracks by amongst others Cindytalk, Black To Comm, Charlemagne Palestine and Nurse With Wound, was “Juv”, also the opening track of Juv’s self-titled album, which is just around the corner now. Juv –the Norwegian word for “abyss”- are Are Mokkelbost and Marius Von Der Fehr, two dark ambient, doom and drone noise loving Norwegians who have got together again after over a decade apart. Between 1996 and 1998, the couple recorded a series of desolate, harsh and oppressive tracks which (and this is fate for you–or the violent break-up of a friendship), once they were finished, were never released. Not so long ago, the pair decided to look again at that material, which sits equidistant to the sonic worlds of Sunn O))), Deathprod, Neurosis, Burzum and Carlos Giffoni, selecting pieces and fragments for a first album that will be released on the Miasmah label on 17th February. In the words of Are Mokkelbost, “this music is one of expectancy and apathy, longing and mourning – made with the limited means of lost youth." While we await definitive confirmation of the tracklist, Miasmah has made four of the tracks available for listening.
