On the night of 7th February 2009, the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, got a visit from three great talents of improvised ambiental music: Austrian Christian Fennesz (widely known for his solo work), American David Daniell (the guitarist of the never highly enough lauded San Agustin, apart from being the author of several efforts put out through Secretly Canadian, Table Of The Elements and Thrill Jockey) and Australian Tony Buck (hyperactive figure of the international improv scene and drummer of The Necks, the trio that operates on the crossroads of jazz, classic-contemporary minimalism and the most placid ambient) shared a musical session for the first time, channelling their collective energies in the direction of expansive and atmospheric music, a kind of warm and involving ambient drones coming from the sweet encounter between textural guitars of the first two and the minimal percussion of Buck. That particular night has led to “Knoxville”, a collection of four long improvised pieces, to be released by Thrill Jockey on 24th August.
