Over at Dutty Artz’s HQ in Brooklyn, one can smell a deep faith in the power—healing, emancipating, euphoric… the list could go on ad infinitum—of riddims. That very same faith that two winters ago, in early 2008, encouraged Jace Clayton (aka DJ /rupture), Matt Schell (aka Matt Shadetek) and Geko Jones to create a nightclub, the New York Tropical, to give free reign to their shared interests in dance and urban music, be it UK bass or digital cumbia, dubstep or dancehall, Bmore club or new meringue, African hip-hip or tropical-accented pop. As they say, their idea was to create an oasis in Brooklyn for “party music from the Anglo- Franco- and Hispano-phone Caribbean, as uprooted and replanted in NYC’s strong diaspora communities.”
That series of parties lasted one and a half years, until the summer of 2009, and inspired other initiatives like Que Bajo?! Now, a year after closing, the Dutty Artz crew is launching a compilation album inspired by the spirit of those first parties. “New York Tropical” features cuts from DJ/rupture, Maga Bo, Rita Indiana, DJ Orion and Matt Shadetek with Lamin Fontana. All the tracks are exclusive to this compilation except the ones by Nguzunguzu and KG.To celebrate the release of the album (out on 9th November), Dutty Artz has created “New York Tropical Tonez”, a collection of ringtones for iPhones inspired by the album’s songs, that you can download here.
