Anticipating the official press release by Raster-Noton, Carsten Nicolai has just revealed that there will be a new album by Alva Noto in October. After his collaborations with Blixa Bargeld (as anbb), Ryoji Ikeda (as Cyclo) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (the recent “Summvs”), Nicolai returns to the solo path with “univrs”. Details on the record are scarce for now, but judging from the title it's likely the album will feature material Alva Noto has been performing over the past six months as part of his audio-visual performance “unitxt / univrs (derivative version)”. As its name indicates, the material revisits and develops the path of “unitxt” (Raster-Noton, 08), an effort on which Nicolai - interested as he is in post-digital minimalism - explored minimal techno. The pieces on “univrs” are structured according to mathematical principles. While on “unitxt” the focus in the studio was on the relation between rhythmical grids and information, “univrs” is about “the conceptual differentiation of a universal language (unit/universe) with its origins in mathematics, defined here on an auditory level.” If everything goes as planned, “univrs” will be out in October on CD and double LP. There will also be a special limited version with an added DVD, we suppose featuring footage of Alva Noto live.
