The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT

Akron/Family “The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT”. What does this sentence suggest to you? Although the Dead Oceans label says they have no idea what it means, for us it’s enough to believe Akron/Family has veered towards more cosmic territories, under a sky with less room for the weird folk and the funk-inflected psych-rock of their previous albums, in favour of a more dense, synthetic, noisy and expansive psychedelia. According to the press release issued by Dead Oceans, the album was apparently written “in a cabin built into the side of Mount Meakan, an active volcano in Akan National Park, on the island of Hokkaido, Japan". Back in the U.S., Akron/Family then recorded their new songs with the help of the recidivist Chris Koltay (search for him on the credits of albums by Atlas Sound, No Age and Liars) and a portable studio installed inside an abandoned train station near Detroit. So this is it: the adventurous gestation of an album due out in the first half of 2011, on 8th February in the U.S. and as of 14th March in Europe.
