Finally, after a long pre-production of nearly five years (it is said that the project began to be discussed in 2007), there is more or less a set date for the premiere of the musical “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots”. As you will have guessed, it is based on the album by The Flaming Lips with the same name. It will premiere in November or December at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse, with Des McAnuff as director and scriptwriter (for some time it was speculated that Aaron Sorkin might be involved, but at a certain point, he pulled out). As we already told you about a year ago, the work will also include songs from other albums like “The Soft Bulletin” and “At War With The Mystics”, although the list has not been specified yet.
The story of “Yoshimi” focuses on a young Japanese artist who travels to a world of robots, where he must fight against a horde of evil forces. The director has stated that rehearsals are expected to start in mid-September. McAnuff was the artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse from 1983 to 1994 and from 2001 to 2007. He currently heads the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and has directed many shows, including “Jersey Boys” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”.
