When Devo entered the scene in the mid 70s, many people thought it was an arty joke denouncing the overflow of disco music and the lack of social engagement shown by millions of Americans towards the necessary revolutions going on in the streets at the time. However, the chain of events led their music to synchronise with the punk and new wave movements, making them part of music history. Devo, living legends of the most delirious art-punk and most dissident new wave, will be the stars of a new documentary that has been four years in the making.
Director Tony Pemberton is making “ Are We Not Men?”. The film, featuring the testimonies of the members of Devo, doesn't only tell the story of the band, but also seeks to show the extent of their influence, explaining the impact the Akron gang had on artists as diverse as David Bowie and Kurt Cobain.
The documentary is in post-production now, but it looks like it will premiere at the next Sundance Film Festival. Judging from the trailer below, it's going to be quite something. If you want to contribute to the project, you have until 7th August to participate in the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.
