We here at PlayGround love to do our own polls each year with the nominees for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize. However, if there's one negative thing that could be said about the ceremony, it's that it's always a bit “inwards”, without really thinking about the fans of the music that is celebrated and awarded. Well, that's about to change.
The award ceremony is changing dates (1st November) and location, moving to the iconic Roundhouse in Camden. That way, there's more room for guests, and for fans to actually attend the show live, through contests and promotions. Furthermore, all the nominated artists will be playing live and it will be broadcast on Channel 4, which will also feature special programs dedicated to each album on the shortlist in the weeks prior to the event. There's also talk, albeit without too much detail, of better online content.
Furthermore, in October, a month before the winner is announced, the nominated artists will do several concerts in London, which will be broadcast on Channel 4 as well.
We leave you with PJ Harvey, winner of the last edition.
