Secretly Canadian is an independent founded in 1996 by Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle and Jonathan Cargill in Bloomington (Indiana). Their first release was a reissue of June Panic's “Glory Hole”. Three years later, Chris Swanson joined Jagjaguwar, and the two labels have been working together ever since. In 2007, some partners of both labels created another imprint with former Misra Records manager Phil Waldorf, Dead Oceans. They all share offices in Bloomington, even though each label has a different philosophy.

Secretly Canadian, apart from being a label, also has a distribution network. It collaborates with other platforms, including the aforementioned alongside Asthmatic Kitty, FatCat Records, Hometapes, K Records, Mush Records, Sounds Familyre, Temporary Residence Ltd., Tomlab and Western Vinyl. At present, the label catalogue features over 250 references on different formats, including Jens Lekman's “Night Falls Over Kortedala” and “I Am A Bird Now” by Antony And The Johnsons. Most of their releases are within the realm of folk.
