Raster-Noton is a German label established in Chemnitz, founded in 1999 as a fusion between Rastermusik, directed by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider, and Noton, Carsten Nicolai's label. Raster-Noton specialises in experimental electronic music including ambient, minimalism, abstract techno and glitch. Its aesthetic is extremely minimalistic, both sound-wise and visually. Most of their releases have a strong conceptual component, and many of them are part of different series in which the artists develop ideas and philosophies.
Apart from releasing music from different projects by its founders (both solo and in collaboration with others), Raster-Noton also has artists like Mika Vainio (alias Ø), Ryoji Ikeda, Thomas Brinkmann, Robin Rimbaud (alias Scanner), Coil, Wolfgang Voigt, Richard Chartier, Taylor Deupree and Kim Cascone on its roster. The label also creates multimedia art installations and has published several books related to the works of its artists in the fields of photography and architecture.
