I can more or less agree that Scarlett Johansson doesn’t have the best voice in history; that is undeniable, and she doesn’t make her living doing it - but there have been worse. Some people talk about her like an indie Paris Hilton, and nothing could be further from the truth. While her expertise as a vocalist is unquestionable, one has to applaud that she has had the courage to venture into complicated recording projects, considering her good reputation in film (not everyone would have the ovaries to sing covers of Tom Waits). It is also true that she has evolved a great deal and in a positive direction; the Johansson with the torn voice of “Anywhere I Lay My Head” is not the same as the suggestive, sleep-walking voice that she offered recently in “Summertime” along with Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja. Besides, if she has collaborated with prestigious musicians, they must see something in her, right?
When we fell in love with Scarlett Johansson in “Lost In Translation”, one of her charms was without a doubt her deep, slightly faltering voice. But much to my dismay, it has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that her vocal chords are no good for singing. After her irritating “homage” to Tom Waits, her contribution to the cover of “Summertime” with 3D has done nothing more than confirm that the best way to fritter away her charm is to insist on being a singer. Although her presence is magnetic on-screen, her voice is totally anodyne. And that’s not to mention her technical shortcomings; if it weren’t for her status as a Hollywood star, she wouldn’t even be able to get onto one of those TV talent shows.
