I don't see why going to a university and sharing your ideas and experiences would be a pedantic thing to do. In fact, I think it makes all the sense in the world that, in this culture of pop idolatry, the thoughts of its highest-ranking representatives would awaken people's interest. Any action or event inviting some kind of reflection is welcome, and if the repercussion multiplies because the lecturer is a famous musician, all the better. Moreover, in the case of BasedGod, it's obvious that thanks to his revolutionary ideas, he has reached an almost preacher-like status. Just look at how his lecture at NYU was received, and you'll see it wasn't only convenient, but downright necessary. I hope it won't be the last time.
I've always been convinced that one should stick to what they know. While it's true that there are multi-disciplinary artists who are simply brilliant in everything they do, I don't think Arcade Fire's Win Butler is the 21st-century Leonardo da Vinci. Therefore, I kindly ask him to stick to what he does best, which is making really good music. If he wants to continue giving a dollar from the revenues of every Arcade Fire concert ticket sold to the NGO to help rebuild Haiti, good for him, but this lecturing thing, IMHO, is not only unnecessarily pedantic, he also runs the risk of becoming some kind of Bono, and heaven knows we don't need another of those. So, musicians of the world, and that means you too, Lil B, please stick to your music.
