Her new album, “Sun”, got an 8.2 on PlayGround, but not everyone agrees; many people are contrary to her present creative direction

Although Chan Marshall’s courage is praiseworthy, doing this new record practically all by herself, playing all the instruments and using a drum machine, the album's still a failure, a far cry from her major works (“The Greatest”, not to mention “Moon Pix” and “You Are Free”). Of the eleven minutes of “Nothin But Time”, nine are obsolete, “Peace And Love” sounds like a quickie, and the lyrics are rather uninspired (like the pretentious “Human Being”). And someone should have told her that her voice doesn't need the Auto-tune and vocoder of “3, 6, 9”. The fact that “Always On My Own”, the song that most sounds like her usual work, is the best track on the LP says enough.

I don't understand why so many people are giving Cat Power the cold shoulder with this new record. I mean, I can see why you would miss the organic fragility of her previous efforts, but this is a bold metamorphosis that has made her much more accessible for a major audience. The fact that she used so many synths, drum machines and vocal filters doesn't make her discourse any less visceral. Like Britney (another misunderstood soul), short hair becomes Chan.
