They’re back through the front door. They’ve left behind the more pop sound of their last “Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust” and reduced everything to the minimum expression, so that Jónsi’s voice once again pierces our soul. His thing is out of this world. It’s been a long time since they made our hair stand on end this way. We still don’t get the cryptic Icelandic language, but the truth is that with such a lovely song, the language barrier is totally secondary.
Sigur Rós have always been a synonym for absolute sleepiness, and “Ekki Múkk” completely confirms that. After giving us a break with their previous work - where at least we could grab a hold of some good pop songs - it looks like the Icelanders are going to go back to trying our patience with their self-absorbed ramblings for cheap sentimentalists. Few things are more irritating than Jónsi’s warblings, and then on top of that, they have to become the focal point of the song. And to top it all off, all we needed was that catatonic video that goes with it. In a word: tedious.
