I think they've crossed the line now. When the “Warp 20” compilation came out in 2009 and I heard the superb “Seven Forty Seven”, I thought that the new material we all wanted so badly was about to be released. But now, seven years have gone by since “The Campfire Headphase” and, while they're still my favourite band, the wait has become almost unbearable. Peter Serafinowicz gave me hope again, but that meagre “yes” on the Scots' Facebook page feels like a bad joke, keeping in mind how reclusive and misanthropic they are. The declarations from the label don't help, either, as I assume the two are always making music. The question is: when will it come out? I don’t think it will be any time soon.
As a fan, one should have accepted a long time ago that the Sandinson brothers have never been shining examples of transparency. It is, in fact, part of their magic. The problem is that now, in this age of hyper-communication, we've become instant gratification junkies. This has led to the declarations of a man like Serafinowicz, known as a practical joker, being interpreted as definitive proof. The same goes for the ambiguous Facebook “yes”. It's reckless to assume that the answer means they're going to release a new album soon, knowing that the two have loads of unreleased recordings because they're such perfectionists. They might have a new album ready, or two, or three, but that doesn't mean they're going to release it. The problem isn't Boards Of Canada, it's their hysterical fans.
