The first materialisation of the 'Remote Orchestra' concept was in September 2011, in Breslavia, Poland, as part of the European Culture Congress. Aphex Twin re-imagined two of the most famous pieces by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima”, and “Polymorphia”, and he did an experiment with directing over seventy musicians (orchestra and choir) via “remote control”, using MIDI controllers and a code of visual signal triggered from a distance.
On 10th October, Aphex Twin will repeat the experience in London, at The Barbican Centre. The Cornish genius will direct a total of forty people by “remote control”. Among other works, The Heritage Orchestra and Choir will perform “Interactive Tuned Feedback Pendulum Array”, a piece by Aphex Twin, developed from the ideas posed by Steve Reich in his “Pendulum Music”.
