At almost 80, American composer Pauline Oliveros is about to see her work from the sixties reissued the way it deserves. Partner in crime of Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender and Terry Riley since the start of the seminal San Francisco Tape Music Center in 1962 (she was the director), Pauline Oliveros has dedicated the past sixty years to composition, theorising about and teaching music, postulating concepts such as “deep listening” and “sonic awareness”, developing a body of work that spans everything from the tape music and purely electronic works of her early years to modern classical pieces, acousmatic sounds, choral music, and undulating, magmatic ambient drone as a result of the electronic manipulation of her favourite instrument, the accordion.
Important Records is recovering the first part of her long career. On 22nd May, the label will release “Reverberations: Tape & Electronic Music 1961-1970”, a retrospective box set of twelve CDs, with essays by Oliveros, Ramon Sender, David Bernstein, Cory Arcangel and Alex Chechile.
