The reserved character of Dutchman Martyn has always been perceived as a touch antisocial, but in an elusive way, never surly or disdainful. He has shown allergies to the cooperative spirit of the scene, and has dribbled circles around the expectations of those who assign him to a category, either personally or in his music. Perhaps that explains that in organising a video shoot for "Great Lengths" (2009), the head of 3024 has chosen one of the most unusual songs from the album as the basis for the play on sober light and the shadow of what one once was. Can you imagine being the guest of honour at your own funeral? At least Martyn's funeral lights up like gala party.
