Oliver Dene Jones (born on 1st June 1986), better known as Skream, is a dubstep DJ and producer currently based in Croydon, London. Skream was one of the first and most prolific dubstep producers and is one of the key figures in the evolution of the genre. He is also part of dubstep super group Magnetic Man, alongside Benga and Artwork. His first steps into music were at the age of 15, when he started producing his own tracks. A year later he dropped out of school to work at the Big Apple Records store in Croydon, the centre of the dubstep scene. His musical education was completed visiting and deejaying at the mythical FWD underground club in Croydon, where the earliest dubstep releases were born.
His first productions, much darker and less melodic than his recent work, were made with his friend Benga and released by the label started by Big Apple Records. As dubstep started to gain notoriety in the more conventional media, Skream's sound became more melodic, less influenced by UK garage and incorporating influences from genres like dub, house and jazz. In 2005 he released the track “Midnight Request Line”, of which the tonal evolution in the riff is considered to be key in the further development of the melodic side of dubstep. In 2006 he released his debut album “Skream!”, followed by “Outside The Box” in 2010, both of them on the Tempa imprint. He has also released six volumes of the “Skreamizm” series, featuring the harder tracks from his repertoire.
