Memory Tapes is the most well-known stage name of Dayve Hawk, a New Jersey producer who at an early stage used a variety of aliases including Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes. Something In Construction released his acclaimed debut album “Seek Magic”; the CD version, exclusive to the Rough Trade record stores, included a bonus disc featuring four tracks, one of which was a remix by The Horrors. The effort made him one of the key players of the chill-wave movement, along with Toro Y Moi, Washed Out and Small Black. In June 2011, Carpark released his second album, “Player Piano”, which was received with somewhat less enthusiasm than its predecessor. Hawk had moved away from his bedroom producer antics and had chosen a more organic sound.
