John Talabot is the stage name of Oriol Riverola (born 8th January 1982), a house DJ and producer from Barcelona, known for his sound incorporating influences from soul, hip-hop, flamenco, oriental music and disco. He is the co-founder of the Hivern Discs label. His stage name is taken from the school he attended.
Riverola was born and raised in Barcelona. He became an electronic music fan in his teens. Before starting the John Talabot project, he was known as D.A.R.Y.L. - under which he worked as a resident DJ at The Loft in Barcelona and released an EP on Factor City. In 2008 he started producing tracks based on samples, influenced by producers like J Dilla and Madlib, but from a house perspective. He signed his new tracks as John Talabot and, initially, remained anonymous. Munich label Permanent Vacation signed him 2009, after hearing his songs on his MySpace page. He made his debut in April 2009 with the EP “My Old School”. In June of that year, he rose to fame with the single “Sunshine”, released on Hivern Discs. In 2011 he put out the EP “Families”, via British label Young Turks, on which he collaborates with American artist Glasser. His debut album, “fin”, will come out in 2012 on Permanent Vacation, featuring collaborations with Pional and Ekhi Lopetegi from the band Delorean. Talabot has done remixes for The XX, Glasser, Aufgang, Teengirl Fantasy, Joakim and Shit Robot, among others.
