Die Antwoord are a hip-hop group from Cape Town, South Africa, formed by MC Ninja, singer Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek. Their sound, with several references to Zef culture, has been defined as rap-rave. The band name means “the answer” in Afrikaans. Before Die Antwoord, Watkin Tudor Jones, alias Ninja, was an active member of the South African hip-hop scene - forming part of bands like The Original Evergreen, MaxNormal.TV and The Constructus Corporation. In 2008 he formed Die Antwoord with Anri Du Toit, alias Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and Justin De Nobrega, alias DJ -Hi-Tek. Their debut album “$O$” was released in 2009 as a free download. That same year they rose to fame thanks to the video for “Enter The Ninja”, directed by Rob Malpage. The song became a worldwide hit and soon enough, Ninja and Yo-Landi travelled to Los Angeles to sign a contract with Interscope. In April 2010, they performed outside South Africa for the first time, at Coachella, in front of 40,000 people. In November 2011 Die Antwoord left Interscope because of a dispute about their second album. Shortly after, the group started their own label, Zef Recordz, on which they will release their new LP. The band has stated that they have five albums in the pipeline. The first, “Ten$ion” will be out in February 2012. Apart from the music, they have also recorded a short film for the track "Wat Kyk Jy?", with American filmmaker Harmony Korine.
