Hudson Mohawke is the stage name of Ross Birchard (born 11th February 1986), a Glasgow producer and DJ signed to Warp and LuckyMe. HudMo grew up listening to pop, soul and funk before he discovered jungle and rave music in the mid-nineties. When he was 11, he got a couple of turntables for his birthday, which he practiced on for hours on end. At 15, he became the youngest ever finalist in the history of the British DMC championship, using the name DJ Itchy. Shortly after, he started playing on radio stations, and changed his name to Hudson Mohawke.
His first two releases on Wireblock and All City Records presented a sound that combined hip-hop with elements from different kinds of electronic music. It caught the attention of Warp, with whom he released his first album in 2009, “Butter”. On the record he reinforced his sound, based on accelerated samples, funk and boogie-style synth leads, bubbling melodies and thick broken rhythms. His production style, very collage-like, is heavily influenced by his years as a turntablist. In 2011 Mohawke released the EP “Satin Panthers” and the single “Pleasure”. They sit within the realm of R&B and hip-hop bootlegs and mash-ups.
