Imagine a four-sided ring with a different cultures on every corner, four different phases in the evolution of British soundsystem culture, challenging each other in front of a devoted audience. This is broadly the concept of Culture Clash: one platform, four scenarios and four UK bass generations fighting it out amiably. Red Bull Music Academy presented it’s first Culture Clash in February this year with Digital Mystikz, Goldie and the Metalheadz crew, Trojan Soundsystem and Jazzie B from Soul II Soul producing beats and bass tunes out of the four corners of London’s Roundhouse. The second round was celebrated on14th October with the Channel One crew, the Metalheadz family (Goldie, Shy FX and Andy C amongst others), Skream and Benga (supported by Joker & Nomad, Artwork, DJ Chef and Sgt Pokes) and Soul Jazz Soundsystem (lead by Soul Jazz Records) sharing the ring. In the end, the audience chose Channel One as the winner of the second RBMA Culture Clash edition, a feast of beats and fat basses that will have a third edition soon.
