Piper and Skylar Kaplan are the two very young Californian sisters who form Puro I nstinct. They make dream-pop with a slightly synthetic pulse (more so on record than when playing live) which drew the attention of, among others, the offbeat Ariel Pink, who took them with him on tour and later offered them his vocals for the magnetic “Stilyagi”. The Noisey cameras followed the girls for a day, this past 28th April, when they were playing the Music Hall in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The girls tell us how they left home at a young age and show that they are holding on strongly to their Russian roots, when they go shopping for forgotten Russian synth-pop classics in Brighton Beach. In the meantime, they talk about the Soviet cassette culture in the eighties. So if you want to know where one of the most promising bands of the North American indie scene comes from and what they sound like, don’t miss out on the videos.
