On Battleship Hill

PJ Harvey On Battleship Hill

PJ Harvey and photographer Seamus Murphy keep visualising the tracks of “ Let England Shake” (Island, 2011). After “Hanging In The Wire”, now “On Battleship Hill” gets a video. The ingredients are the same: a character (in this case, one Franz, the stepfather of Sebastian Gollek, Murphy’s host on recent visits to Berlin) presents the piece reciting some verses of the song, with whiskey on his breath and a wife-beater covering his chest. Of course there’s an image of the hill from the title and of the soldiers who lost their lives there. What we don’t really get are the ladies playing bingo on Canvey Island, near Southend, Essex. Anyway, the visuals are, once again, brilliant. Bravo.

San Miguel Primavera Sound 2011 takes place on 25 and 29 May at Poble Español, and from 26 to 28 May at Parc del Forum in Barcelona. Tickets are on sale here.
