When MGMT said that for their second album the audience could forget about instant hits like " Kids" or " Time to Pretend", nobody paid any mind. But it turned out they were right, and that going for a nuanced record wasn’t as bad an idea as some people suggested at the time. As a single, " Congratulations" is even more surprising than “ Flash Delirium ”, “ Siberian Breaks” or “ It’s Working ”. Most of all because of its quiet vibe, as the album’s closer, but also because of the lyrics, which seem to suggest that Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden are a bit fed up with the world they created for themselves. Maybe that’s the reason they go into the desert in this video, suffering when they see their pet dinosaur going to pieces little by little. A metaphor for their career? We’ll see.
