On the stairway to the top of UK electronica there's one step every artist has to take: recording an “Essential Mix” for BBC Radio 1. Jamie xx did it last Saturday, and he did a fine job. The young talent delivered an extraordinary two-hour set during which he shows his talent as a DJ is just as substantial as his producing skills. Moving between genres like house, garage, disco and boogie, the Briton takes us on a journey through his musical DNA during which continuous time jumps and the constant rhythmic changes are no obstacle (more like the opposite) to creating a mood of sensuality and nocturnality, while at the same time showing great music knowledge and skill. More than glorious.
