New York Is Killing Me
Almost as intriguing as the images that make it up (a sombre visual meditation on life in New York City) are the factors surrounding this Gil Scott-Heron video. The film is the work of the elusive Chris Cunningham (it’s the first music video he’s directed in more than four years) who, in his attempts at blending music and images, has gone deep into the song and come up with an even gloomier version. It’s unusual that a music video coming from a more or less “pop” environment (the XL Recordings label) is premiered at the great MoMa. With these references, your curiosity is more than justified.
