From Jack to Juke: 25 Years of Ghetto House

Documentary

The director Sonali Aggarwal has just shared with us her most recent work: a documentary that reviews the genealogy of juke all the way back to the original house. The title makes it very clear: “ From Jack to Juke: 25 Years of Ghetto House.” Starting from the origins of house in Chicago, the piece analyses the style’s subsequent mutations, the ones that gave rise to labels like ghetto-house, ghetto-tech, and B-More, until they resulted in the highly accelerated, sweaty music that dominates the youth social centres and underground clubs of today’s Chicago. Co-produced by DJ Slugo, the documentary includes the testimony of essential stars of the juke movement like DJ Traxman, DJ Deeon, DJ Gant-Man DJ V-Dub, and DJ Omega, among others.
